The heavy rainfall last week has raised questions about gully clearing and flooding in Carshalton and Wallington.
Unsurprisingly, yet again, the pass under the Wallington railway bridge flooded, blocking the road as it has done many times over the years. The Council have stated in this Sutton Guardian article that they are working on it, which I will be following with interest.
In an email I received from the Council following the rainfall, I was informed that:
Due to the volume of rain that fell yesterday in a short space of time following a prolonged dry spell there were a high number of areas which saw surface water flooding. Many of the areas cleared quickly once the rain had stopped.
High-risk gullies highlighted within our flood risk areas are more frequently cleaned and scheduled every 3 months. Soakaways are maintained through a reactive programme. However, with such dry ground and heavy rainfall it is not possible to prevent all surface water flooding.
We have passed on to our contractors any reports of debris or blockages received last night. If you have any further concerns please use the Report It webpage.
Full information regarding reporting flooding is available to residents on our website.
Please do call the Council on 020 8770 5000 or email flooding@sutton.gov.uk if you have any concerns about problem areas, especially blocked gullies.
