As the local MP, I have spoken about the Go Sutton Bus in a recent debate in Parliament, urging TfL to put their service back on for local residents.
This follows a number of conversations I've had with TfL about the service.
Sutton Conservatives had been making representations to TfL to expand and keep the service running. Our Council Group had made these representations in Local Committees, the Public Transport Liasion Group, and via direct correspondence.
On 25th February 2020, TfL spoke to my office on the phone and confirmed the Go Sutton Bus trial would be extended until August. I sent the below letter to TfL to ask for confirmation of that.
On 26th March 2020, TfL emailed their Go Sutton Bus customers to say they were suspending their service due to the Coronavirus pandemic. I consequently wrote to TfL to express my disappointment and hope that they would reintroduce it when they felt it safe to do so. I chased a reply to this letter on 11th June 2020 after I found out that I had secured an Adjournment Debate on transport issues in Carshalton and Wallington.
In addition to letters and phone calls, I have used every opportunity I have to speak to TfL whether that be site meetings, virtual meetings, etc, to raise transport issues in Carshalton and Wallington, including the Go Sutton Bus. I know my colleagues including Paul Scully MP, Councillor Neil Garratt and others have also spoke to TfL about this. Our London Assembly Member, Steve O'Connell, working with our excellent candidate Neil Garratt, asked the Mayor of London on 24th February about an extension. I am also aware that TfL spoke to Paul Scully MP during a site visit on 24th February about an extension. This is on top of work my Conservative councillor colleagues have been doing in order to persuade TfL to extend the service. For example, on 15th January, Councillor Peter Geiringer emailed TfL to ask for more information about this service. TfL have also been present at a number of Local Committees of the Council where Conservative councillors, including the Carshalton and Clockhouse Committee, where Councillor Moira Butt asked about an expansion of the service, the Sutton South, Cheam and Belmont Committee, as well as the Sutton Local Committee where Conservative councillors asked about the future of the scheme.
I will be meeting TfL again on 10th July to discuss this and many other issues relating to transport in our Borough.
Perhaps if the Lib Dems actually got on with the day job, rather than making up stories, they could actually achieve something for our Borough.
