The British Liver Trust held an event in Parliament today, which I was glad to attend, to highlight liver disease and its impact on Carshalton and Wallington.
Whilst these I had my own liver tested to see how healthy it was.
Liver disease is a silent killer: most people with the condition don’t know they have it until the disease is at an advanced stage. It is the biggest cause of death for those aged between 35-49 years old, and is a major health challenge across every age group. The three main risk factors are excessive alcohol consumption, being overweight and contracting viral hepatitis. A focus on early diagnosis is crucial to overcome this public health crisis; it’s Time to DeLiver.
Around 90% of all liver disease is preventable, but one in three of us are at risk of liver disease.
In Sutton, 27 under-75s died from liver disease in 2017.
The local liver disease mortality rate is 16.2 per 100,000 people, which is below the national average of 18.05. The number of years of life lost to liver disease in Sutton is below the national average per 10,000 people.
I look forward to working with the British Liver Trust to ensure the best possible outcomes for local patients.
