SGN have postponed these works during the COVID-19 outbreak. I will update residents on the new timetable as soon as I can.

SGN have contacted me to make me aware of forthcoming upgrades to their gas network in Purley Way (A23) and Waddon Park Avenue, Croydon. This work is to replace a mains pipe which has been identified as requiring replacement under the HSE mandated gas pipe replacement programme. SGN's project involves the essential replacement of old metal gas mains and individual service pipes, with new plastic pipe. This will ensure SGN can continue to provide a safe and reliable gas supply to the local area. Their contractor Essex Utilities will undertake this work on SGN's behalf.
In consultation with Croydon Council and TFL, SGN have agreed to complete the following work in two phases, which includes traffic management in place to ensure the safety of everyone around the site.
Phase one:
- On 6 April 2020 for approximately 8 weeks, SGN will be working outside number 345 Purley Way (A23) to number 385
- SGN will need to implement a lane closure on the A23 during this time to ensure the safe flow of traffic around their works
- As they progress along the road, SGN will need to temporarily close side roads that are accessed via the A23, within their working zone
- When SGN close the junction with Godson Road, a diversion will be in place via Courtney Road and Waddon Road
- When SGN close the junction with Alton, a diversion will be in place via Waddon Park Avenue
- SGN will also need to implement a road closure on Waddon Park Avenue for the final 2 weeks of phase one
- The closure will be from the junction with Purley Way (A23) to outside number 60 Waddon Park Avenue
- A diversion will be in place via Alton Road and Purley Way (A23)
- Pedestrian access will always be maintained
Phase two
- On 22 July 2020 for approximately 7 weeks, SGN will be working on Purley Way (A23) from the junction with Mill Lane to the junction with Waddon Court Road
- SGN will need to implement a lane closure on the A23 during this time to ensure the safe flow of traffic around their works
- As they progress along the road, SGN will need to temporarily close side roads that are accessed via the A23, within their working zone
- When SGN close the junction with Limes Avenue, a diversion will be in place Lodge Avenue
- When SGN close the junction with Lodge Avenue, a diversion will be in place via Limes Avenue
- Please note, the direction of traffic will be made two-way on Limes Avenue and Lodge Avenue during their respective closures on the A23
- On 22 July 2020, SGN will also need to implement a road closure on Waddon Road for 3 weeks, at the junction with Purley Way (A23)
- There will be no right turn on Purley Way (A23) heading Northbound onto Waddon Road
- A signed diversion will be in place via Purley Way (A23), Mitcham Road, Reeves Comer, Cario Road and Waddon New Road
- During this time, SGN will also be working on Mill Lane for two weeks, from the junction with Purley Way (A23) to the rear of number 4 Limes Avenue (on Mill Lane)
- Please note, parking bays will be suspended on Purley Way (A23), opposite Limes Avenue
SGN's communication plan is to contact schools, businesses, buses, and major interest groups by email, telephone or letter to ensure that everyone understands the nature and details of the work. SGN understand that people can get frustrated by roadworks. However, the new plastic pipe has a minimum lifespan of 80 years. This means that when the work is complete, residents and businesses will continue to enjoy the benefits of a safe and reliable gas supply for years to come.
Please share this information with anyone you think may be impacted by their work. Thank you in advance for your patience and understanding while SGN carry out these essential upgrades, and please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any concerns or comments about the works.
