On behalf of the World Dog Alliance (WDA), I was delighted to attend an event in Parliament today to support the campaign to ban the human consumption of dog and cat meat around the world. I would like to see the end of dog and cat meat consumption, and the cruel practices associated with it, across the globe.
To strengthen the campaign for a proper ban in the UK, where consumption remains legal in certain circumstances, the WDA is co-ordinating an International Convention. I met with representatives from the WDA – who provided an update on their campaigns across the globe. They also shared insights on what impact they have seen since the United States joined the long list of nations which have implemented a ban on the human consumption of dog meat.
While there is, fortunately, no evidence of dog or cat meat consumption in the UK, it is imperative the UK, as a nation of animal lovers, signals its abhorrence to the practice, which often engenders unbelievable cruelty. We can do that by bringing in a proper ban here and joining the likes of the US, Germany, Austria, Hong Kong, Taiwan and South Australia, and this would show the world that the UK is a global leader in animal welfare.
