At the end of 2021, I received the above letter from a High View Primary School student which shared concerns over road safety on the pupil's walk to school.
This view has been shared by many residents, with over 80 people taking part in my survey on the matter. Following this, I approached Sutton Council with the survey results, specifically mentioning the width of the pavement being too narrow, the lack of safety barrier between the pavement and the road, and the speed at which cars drive along the road.
When asked if residents would support railings to protect pedestrians (especially school children), over 70 people responded in favour.
Sutton Council has considered this survey and has provided the below response. My next steps will be to contact Transport for London to push for the appropriate funding for this project to be delivered, as well as working with our GLA Member Neil Garratt to push the Mayor of London. If you would like further updates on this issue, or have experienced dangerous driving yourself on this road, please email me at elliot.colburn.mp@parliament.uk.
Dear Elliot Colburn MP
Thank you for your email highlighting local concerns regarding road safety for pupils walking to school using Plough Lane
A Plough Lane area scheme (which includes the junction of Plough Lane and The Chase) was due to be progressed this year, including the feasibility of a 20mph speed limit but is currently on hold. I must emphasise that there is still a great deal of uncertainty around our TfL funding allocations for next financial year. Once the funding situation becomes clearer, I will be able to update you further. Despite this, you constituent's comments have been noted and will be considered while developing the scheme
I hope this clarifies the current situation and if you would like to discuss in more detail please do not hesitate to contact me
Kind regards
